How often do we achieve our goals only to realise they weren’t what we wanted?
Quite often it happens because we use as our North Start the “common” goals – financial independence, professional recognition, family and children.
These are fantastic goals and I am 100% up for every one of them, but…
The devil is always in the details. The problem is that the goals above are too generic – there are a million ways to earn money and build relationships. But only a few are yours, only a few will give you the satisfaction of work well done, only a few will give you motivation to push through the challenges that you inevitably encounter, and only a few will give you no regret about spending the precious time of your life pursuing them. So, what path do you choose for yourself?
We often choose the most common, the most familiar, the most accepted. And when you choose to follow a generic path, the path that was walked by millions before you – it is not a surprise that you may find yourself arriving at the wrong summit!
So, what is the solution? For me, it seems self-discovery is the only way.
What is self-discovery you may ask – well, it is a process, an act of getting to know yourself better. Note that I use present continuous here “getting to know yourself”. This is because you are a wonderful, complex and forever evolving being, therefore there is no end to the process of self-discovery. Every new person, book, or event will change you; sometimes slightly, sometimes dramatically. As a result, you will evolve and discover new facets of yourself! And it is fascinating actually! It frees you from doubts and it gives you the most enjoyable experiences because you know what you want and know how to get it your way, aka the easiest way!
How do you start, you may ask?
Well, you start by paying attention to your dreams and your fears. Both are guiding you, and you need to learn not only how to interpret but how to act on them.
Your dreams are your way to your expansion, the direction to the greater you. And after all that I have seen in life, I am sure now that you wouldn’t dream about something if you couldn’t reach it! You just need to allow yourself to follow that path.
And here straight away I hear you telling me how your dream is impossible because of this or that. And it is your fear raising its head. Recognise it, familiarize yourself with it, and get closer to it. By doing it you become braver, more equipped, and closer to your dream than ever.
I love Carl Jung’s, famous psychologist, take on that – “Where is your fear, there is your task” and interpret it in a quite useful way that helps me check whether The Big Goal that I am currently trying to achieve – is the correct goal for me in my particular situation, at that time and the season of life.
For example my dream, my goal is to share my message about continuous self-discovery with millions, so they can live an aligned, fulfilled life. But I am afraid of so many things that lay on my way – from my own insecurities to societal pressure that not particularly prizing individuals who wander far from the bitten path. It’s still not that common for people to live their lives on their own terms. Still, so many sacrifices are asked of us, sacrifices that bring us no benefits, by dread. How many are staying in the jobs they hate, continuing in hurtful relations, and living in places that are not suited to them? And are afraid to change, move on, and build the life they always wanted?
See, how here my fears interlace with my dream, my goal and the actual problem I want to solve. It is the best indicator that this is my way, the right way, the goal that I will never regret achieving and spending my energy on!
You also have a goal like this, a Goal that will give you chills and excitement simultaneously. It doesn’t have to be big, not at all, it just needs to be yours!
I got to know an elderly woman living in my neighbourhood, whose life was ups and downs as for all of us. She dreamed whole her life a cliche dream about her house and beautiful roses all around it. But due to her husband’s work, they moved a lot. She saw the world and many would envy her life and opportunities, and she even bit herself up about why she is not content with what she has, and why such a cliche dream (her own words) is haunting her. Long story short – after divorce and inevitable downsizing she can afford the tiniest house in the neighbourhood, but hurray with grass loan all around. A few years in and there are roses all around – neighbours asking for advice, a few gardening firms in town asking her to be their representative, and people coming from far away just to take pictures of her garden. And do I need to tell her that she is in the happiest years of her life?
You never know how your most cliche goal can actually change lives, yours and others! So don’t you dare stop dreaming! Make your dreams your goals, be afraid but do reach them anyway and it will be your easier path to a fulfilling life! The life that you will never regret!
